The advent and proliferation of smartphones present cultural institutions with valuable new opportunities to display and share their collections. But constantly evolving technology is complicated and costly, demanding resources for implementation and maintenance. These challenges leave many institutions grappling with how to best use technology and keep pace with change. In this session, we’ll explore the changing relationship between cultural institutions and an increasingly mobile generation. Using Urban Archive as our case study, we discuss how Sam and her team have used open data and mobile technology to catalyze sharing, collaboration and public engagement across 40-plus cultural organizations in both NYC and Newburgh, NY.
